Play Area Signs That Make Learning Visible
Every corner of a play-based classroom has a story to tell. These Play Area Signs help you share that story with families, visitors and other educators by showing exactly what your children are learning as they play.
This printable collection includes 30 coordinated posters for indoor and outdoor classroom learning areas. Each sign explains what children do in that space and highlights eight developmental learning objectives. They make the educational value of play super easy to see and understand.
Help Families See the Learning Behind Play
When children are busy building with blocks, mixing mud pies or creating at the collage table, there's so much more learning happening than first meets the eye.
They're experimenting, making decisions, solving problems, developing language and building very important social skills.
But not everyone recognises the learning taking place.
These play area signs give you a simple way to share those valuable learning opportunities. Display them in your classroom learning areas so parents and visitors can discover the skills children are developing through the everyday play experiences you provide.
I find that they are also a helpful reminder of the many opportunities for intentional teaching within the classroom environment.
What's Included in Your Play Area Signs?
You'll receive 30 printable classroom posters, each featuring:
A What Happens Here? section – A brief explanation of the play experiences children explore in that learning area.
A What Are Children Learning? section – Eight specific learning objectives highlighting developmental skills and curriculum-related learning.
Neutral, nature-inspired colours – A calm, coordinated design that complements Reggio-inspired and play-based classrooms.
The collection includes signs for block play, dramatic play, reading, writing, maths, science, sensory play, loose parts, construction, creative arts, outdoor learning and many more.
When creating these posters, I referred to the following curriculum documents and early childhood frameworks...
ACARA - Australian Curriculum
EYLF - Early Years Learning Framework
AAP - Age-Appropriate Pedagogies
Common Core Standards
Two Versions Included – American English and Australian/UK English spelling and vocabulary.
Create a Classroom That Communicates Learning
I created these posters because I wanted the learning happening in my classroom to be visible to everyone.
Over my years teaching young children, I've found that a thoughtfully organised play environment can support so many different areas of development. These posters give a simple explanation to help others recognise that learning too.
You can also use them when reviewing your classroom setup, planning new play invitations or identifying opportunities to extend children's learning.
You probably won't need all 30 of these posters in your classroom, but I wanted to include as many of the common early years learning areas as possible so you can choose the signs that suit your space and change them as your classroom evolves.
