How to Make a Wet Felted Play Mat

How to Make a Wet Felted Play Mat

There is something special about a hand felted woollen play mat. For a child, playing with natural wool fibres offers a beautiful sensory experience. The organic properties of wool soothe the delicate senses and nervous systems of children.

This tutorial will take you through the process of making your own wet felted play-mat. You will be able to create a one of a kind family heirloom to treasure for years to come. I love felting and I can’t wait for you to experience the joy and satisfaction of making a piece yourself.

Wet felting is such a wonderful activity to do with children too. Working with the hands develops brain pathways in a child and in turn, helps with other types of learning as well. A child will also develop confidence and a sense of accomplishment as they experience the joy of transforming wool fibres into a purposeful toy.

From Play, through Beauty, to Work: This is a golden path for education. In later life the most abstract tasks, the most difficult techniques, do not arouse antipathy if this path has been followed during childhood.

Rudolf Steiner, Waldorf Education Founder

Wet felting is good for the soul. It’s purposeful play at its best and a great introduction to mindfulness.
